CAMPAIGN FOR ETHICAL INDIAN SANDSTONE GIVEN WEIGHT BY ITV NEWS

A lone voice within the hard landscaping sector for the past four years, Marshalls has been campaigning to raise awareness of the use of child labour in the sandstone industry in India. A number of bodies and individuals have been scathing regarding Marshalls’ campaigning and have publicly said that child labour is not an issue and does not exist. Clearly ITV news reporter Rohit Kachroo does not agree. The special report which aired on ITV News at Ten yesterday (Thursday 9 July and available to see again at www.itv.com/news) adds an unequivocal and independent weight to the issue of child labour and clearly shows what Marshalls has been campaigning against as part of its wider sustainability drive in Rajasthan.

UNICEF estimates that India has the largest number of labourers under the age of 14 in the world. At a typical Indian quarry, nearly 20% of workers are children – some often bonded to gang masters and working to pay off their family’s debts. Sandstone slabs and setts produced in illegal quarries are arriving in the UK and are openly available from many leading suppliers.

The ITV report showed the continued use of child labour in Indian stone quarries with children as young as five, barely bigger than the stone slabs they are hammering. Rohit Kachroo commented on his findings: "The stone is a cheap and endless natural resource but here it seems, so are the children.” He continues: “With an estimated 200,000 children employed in this industry, campaigners say few foreign companies can claim their Indian stone is free of child labour."

Four years ago, Marshalls started raising issues of child labour in Indian quarries to UK audiences, only to be met with scepticism and cynical retorts. Since then, Marshalls has continued to act tirelessly on the ground in India to tackle these issues head-on and has changed its approach to its supply chain. So much so that the company has won numerous prestigious awards for its ethical supply chain management in India, including a Big Tick from Business in the Community, a Sustain Award for International Trade and the PLC Award for Sustainability.

The first company in the hard landscaping industry to belong to the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), Marshalls is committed to adopting the ETI Base Code, which includes the principles that child labour should not be used, no-one should be forced to work and working conditions should be safe and healthy. Marshalls’ sole supplier in India, Stoneshippers India, has been independently audited against the ETI base code by both UK and India-based expert auditors. In partnership with Marshalls, Stoneshippers works to ensure practices are in place to prevent the use of child labour and that focus is placed on making sure workers earn a living wage and are properly and safely equipped to do their job

Marshalls takes its ethical responsibility very seriously and Marshalls staff regularly visit the remote quarrying areas in Rajasthan. On a recent visit in February this year, Group Marketing Director Chris Harrop opened Marshalls’ fourth school for the children of migrant workers. Harrop comments: “The ethical and social issues surrounding the Indian Natural Sandstone market are complex and only by working closely with our supplier and a local NGO, Hadoti Hast Shlip Sansthan, can we make a positive impact.”

It is only when buying Indian sandstone in the UK from an ETI member that has an independently audited supply chain in compliance with the ETI base code, like Marshalls, that consumers can be sure that everything possible has been done to ensure their new patio has not been produced by child labour. It is imperative that consumers fully understand the impact of their buying decisions, so that change and real progress can be made in India.

For more information on Indian sandstone, please take a look at The Truth About Imported Indian Sandstone (www.marshalls.co.uk), a specially produced publication looking at issues of child labour and bonded labour in Indian stone quarries. Shocking images, much like the ones seen in ITV’s special report, show young children working on stone slabs destined for the UK market.
